[Tube of meat. Maki said something about hot dogs and sausages giving him the willies for that reason. "I don't get why they don't freak more people out! They're just tubes of meat!" Artificially soft, artificially salty. Hikaru chews his way through the gas station hot dog with a gnashing that's forgotten how soft hot dogs are compared to an unadulterated piece of flesh. His teeth clack together but he doesn't mind. Neither does he mind the smear of mayonnaise on his cheek. The hot dog bun is a little stale, and the hot dog itself... Well, it was the only gas station around for kilometers, and so it's probably the same for the hot dogs, too. But it's warm, and that's pretty good, even if a warm dead thing is different from a warm alive thing. Even if (Hikaru chews and swallows and chews and swallows like he's committing a show of force.) a tube of meat is different from a body. It's enough for now.
When Yoshiki steps out of the bathroom, he'll seeHikaru right away. Hikaru sits cross-legged on the bed, which is just opposite the bathroom door, even though his clothes are damp. It's raining again, audible against the roof and window, and must have began while Hikaru was walking back to the inn. The yields of his journey are spilling out of the plastic bags beside him: bottles of tea and soda, snacks, ready-made or instant food, and some medicine for Yoshiki's stomach, too. Hikaru has one of the inn's white towels draped over his damp head, and half a hot dog shoved into his mouth. He blinks at Yoshiki's emergence before his eyes relax above an obstructed smile.
Once he's managed to swallow enough, he says,] Sorry. I was mega hungry.
[He didn't start eating as soon as he got back. Actually, he was a little surprised that Yoshiki had still been in the shower. At some point, through the bathroom door and amid the shower spray,Hikaru heard Yoshiki sigh in the luxurious way of a tongue sweeping over ice cream, heavier and more pleasurable to hear than the rush of the rain outside. Hikaru realized then that Yoshiki just didn't realize how long he'd been in the shower, and he was glad for Yoshiki to be there. He was glad for Yoshiki to be there, enjoying himself, even as it meant...
Hikaru just had to start eating, that's all.
(Even as it meant that Yoshiki wasn't here.)
But here is Yoshiki now, fresh out of the shower and looking well-steamed. The pink in his cheeks (Hikaru bites through the too-soft meat.) was much-needed, and Hikaru looks upon him approvingly as he swallows down the rest of the hot dog. He realizes then that he's probably looking for too long--Yoshiki, just out of the shower and seemingly not expecting to see Hikaru already back with shopping--Just wash up first, Hikaru had said, and I'll run out, I don't mind. Hikaru realizes that he might be looking for too long. Gazing. He thumbs some sauce away from the edge of his mouth. Then his smile fills back in and he looks down to the shopping bags and gestures for Yoshiki.]
